A Question for YOU!

We have had all four of our babies use the same car seat. It expired in 2004. So Rylie and Sara both used it although it was past it's expiration. (And yes, we are cheap-scapes.) Do you think it's still safe to use it for our baby-on-the-way? It has never been in a car accident and never exposed to the sun for long amounts of time. I'm still confused how a car seat can expire. If it was safe in 2000, is it still safe in 2010? We honestly don't know, so please share your wisdom! I really don't want to fork out a hundred bucks if I don't have to.

I cant answer your car seat Q because ours is expired too! I love the baby sling! I have one too but it is pink and bronson loved it! How much fun to go to the baby expo. They always have such neat inventions!

Well, we chose to use a new one because ours too had expired.
I read that it's because the plastic is only rated to withstand the force of an accident for "x" amount of years and after that it loses it's structural integrity. As an engineer, that spoke to Rick and he decided we needed a new one. We were able to use one from a friend that had just had their last baby for our infant car seat and we bought a new convertible seat for our 16 m.o. (I had bought Ashlyn's infant and convertible seats at the same time while I was pregnant in Pullman - so they both expired at the same time).
I felt more comfortable with it, but the fact that I only had to pay for one was nice - any chance you could borrow from someone's who's done or just outgrew a seat and won't need it for a while?
Good luck and congrats!!!

We used the carseat for Price when Carter was a baby and it was expired. Price only used it for 6 months so I didn't think it was a big deal but it is up to you.

I would personally replace it. Try to find a family you know & trust and see if they have a new-er one that you can buy off of them, if you don't want to pay the cost of new. I agree with the first comment--you don't want to risk structural integrity with your child! That's my personal opinion though, and I'm a first-time mom so I'm a little more freakish when it comes to safety and such with my son. Best wishes! ~ camille

I was wondering about this when we had Isaac and I asked one of the state patrol workers at the carseat checking clinic they have here and he said (okay, ours was navy blue), they were places on the base that the plastic was being distorted okay that is not the word he used, but I cannot remember what word it was exactly) because you could see white marks where it was changing. I think that carseats last way longer than we are told they do, but on the other hand, they are my babies and I get a new one just to be safe because they are my babies! Good Luck!
